Let me begin this blog by telling you how blessed I am. I’ve moved to a beautiful new country, experienced new and exciting cultures, become a part of an exceptional family, and best of all I am a part of something that I’ve dreamed about for years, the Autism Support Center (Kenya). I’m originally from a small farming town in Pennsylvania, so you can imagine the culture shock I experienced when I first came to Kenya several years ago. From the time I was a very small I told everyone I met that I wasn’t meant to live in such a small town, I was meant for something bigger, somewhere bigger. Nairobi Kenya is apparently that big place that I was destined for.
Moving here was not easy. The culture is different, the lifestyle is different and don’t even get me started on the lack of driving rules and etiquette. But it’s a good life. There are lots of opportunities in this country.
Since I arrived I managed to become part of a great team at the Autism Support Center (Kenya). I’ve met lots of amazing parents, beautiful children, and I’ve made lifelong friends. The children we’ve worked with so far have been amazing. Their ages range from about 8 years old to around 16 or so. They have all kinds of disorders, autism, cerebral palsy, and muscular dystrophy; the mothers of these kids are inspiring. They have overcome so many obstacles since becoming mothers of children with special needs. In this country, it used to be that disability is seen as a curse from God, and these children whom are affected are thought to have been possessed by demons, therefore they are run out of their villages, hidden away, beaten or even killed. Finally, those stereotypes are slowly fading and awareness of these disorders is being spread.
We have some really great projects and programs going on. One of our biggest projects is An Adopt an Autism Tree Project, which is being implemented at a time when the world is looking for solutions to forest degradation, deforestation and how to cope with the negative effects of climate Change. Persons with autism and other developmental disabilities are determined to engage in activities that promote a greener planet. We seek out organizations, businesses, institutions and individuals interested in going green to adopt an Autism Tree and help a child with autism access important educational and therapeutic services. Once a tree is adopted then we will come to a chosen location, and a child with autism will plant your tree for you! Attached to your beautiful new tree will be a plastic plaque that will give the date, the name of the child that planted the tree, and the name of our organization; that way every time you see your growing tree you will think of a special child with autism that is growing and exceeding beyond their disorder because of your generosity.
